What's been done so far?
This FAQ was designed for customer's which have already purchased the InterStar Residential MailGuard service. By the time you read this FAQ,
  • You should have completed payment for the service
  • You should have received an email acknowledging Stage 1 setup of the service
  • You are ready to complete the setup of MailGuard

Checking your mail before the final change
(This will need to be performed for EACH email address using MailGuard)

Since all of your email will soon be forwarded to your new MailGuard account, you will need to check your email one last time before you make the changes.

Please note,  if you use Silky Mail (InterStar Webmail) to check your mail, you will need to print your email to save it or configure Outlook Express to retrieve your email from the server .

Activating the new mail feature
(This will need to be performed for EACH email address using MailGuard)

Now it's time to activate MailGuard by having InterStar's email server forward all your email to the MailGuard system.

NOTE: As soon as your confirmation
letter is sent the forward on your
new mail will be in place. Mail will
now be delivered to Mail Guard.

To receive mail, configuration changes
(described below) must be completed.
If you have any problems contact us
using one of the methods described here.

  6. Click on the SERVERS tab.
  7. Change the "Incoming mail (POP3)" field to filter.intrstar.net
  8. Change the "Outgoing mail (SMTP)" field to filter.intrstar.net
  9. Click APPLY and OK
  10. Click CLOSE

How to retrieve mail from virtual domains properly
(including filter.intrstar.net)

Email domains are normally assigned an IP address for the domain, and the user retrieves the Email by connecting to the IP of the domain. There is no way for the mail server to "confuse" this user with a user of the same name in a different domain.

With virtual email domains the basic problem stems from the fact that a Virtual domain is not bound to an IP address. Since you can have username1@domain1.com and username1@domain2.com and both use the same IP there is no way to tell them apart.

The solution is to include the domain with the username.

With	Outlook
Outlook Express
	Pegasus
	and most other mail clients
In the sections where one defines the username and password,
	instead of using the following:

		Username = yourname

	You would use:

		Username = yourname@virtual.domain.com
		ie;       customer@filter.intrstar.net
		or        customer@customersdomain.com

With	Netscape Mail
Netscape Mail unfortunately strips anything after an @ sign. So to fool it, you have to use yourname%virtualdomain.com. Modus will interpret the percentage (%) sign the same way as an (@) sign, but Netscape Mail will consider it as part of the whole username, thus fooling it.
Note that you can use the (%) sign with all the other mail clients mentioned above, and it will still work. So you can use the user%domain.com at all times if you like. The only exception is Eudora.
		Username = yourname%virtual.domain.com
		ie;       customer%filter.intrstar.net
		or        customer%customersdomain.com

With	Eudora
	Eudora Light

Eudora Light is a special case because it asks for the "POP3 Account" and wants the whole POP3 address right away. This works fine for email domains with IP addresses, but it doesn't work at all for virtual email domains.
Example:Put yourname%domain.com@filter.intrstar.net instead.

ie; customer%filter.intrstar.net@filter.intrstar.net

or customer%customersdomain.com@filter.intrstar.net

What happens is Eudora will use what's after the @ sign and use it as the reference to access the server. Then, it'll pass the whole yourname%virtual.domain.com as the username.

Testing Your Change
(This will need to be performed for EACH email address using MailGuard)

To test your changes, exchange some email with a friend. You should be able both to send and receive email.
